White Labs WLP001 (California Ale): The Third Face of the Chico Strain

WLP001 completes the trio of clean American ale strains sharing a common lineage — alongside Fermentis US-05 and Wyeast 1056, all three trace back to the same Chico-associated origin, and WLP001 is White Labs' own liquid vial version of it. The flavour output across all three is close enough that most brewers treat them as functionally the same yeast in different packaging, though the details of format and handling genuinely differ.

A narrower published range than its relatives

WLP001's published temperature range, 66-70°F, is noticeably narrower than US-05's 59-75°F or 1056's 60-72°F — not necessarily because the underlying yeast biology is different, but because White Labs' published range reflects a tighter recommended window for optimal results rather than the full range the yeast can technically survive and ferment in. Brewers who've fermented WLP001 outside that narrower band, in either direction, generally still get usable beer, though character shifts the same general way any American ale strain's does — cleaner and more restrained toward the cooler end, more ester-forward toward the warmer end.

Flocculation stands out from its siblings

Medium-high flocculation is WLP001's most distinct trait relative to 1056's medium-low rating — WLP001 tends to drop clearer, faster, without extended cold-crashing, a real practical advantage for brewers wanting to package sooner. This flocculation difference is arguably a bigger practical distinction between WLP001 and 1056 than any flavour gap between them.

Sharing 1056's numbers, not just its lineage

Because WLP001 and Wyeast 1056 share the same published 73-80% attenuation range, the same midpoint arithmetic applies to both: a 1.050 wort finishes near 1.012, about 5.0% ABV by the simple formula. Vial handling and viability

As a liquid strain, WLP001 needs the same viability discipline any liquid yeast requires — checking the manufacture date, building a starter sized for the pack's actual age rather than assuming full viability, and pitching promptly rather than letting a vial sit unrefrigerated. A neglected vial loses viable cell count meaningfully faster than a dry packet degrades under equivalent poor handling.

PurePitch and packaging changes

White Labs has changed its liquid yeast packaging format over time (the PurePitch line among them), and brewers comparing older recipe notes or forum advice to a currently sold WLP001 product should expect some difference in exactly how the yeast is packaged and how much starter building is recommended, even though the underlying strain and its attenuation and flocculation behaviour haven't meaningfully changed. Checking the current product's own cell-count guidance rather than assuming an older recipe's starter size still applies is worth the extra minute of research before committing to a brew day plan.

Its share of the American ale space

American pale ale, American IPA, and any clean, hop-forward or malt-forward American style are WLP001's natural home — the same broad style range US-05 and 1056 cover, since all three strains are, for practical brewing purposes, close enough to interchangeable that the choice mostly comes down to format and what a given homebrew shop has in stock that week.
