Chasing haze through shortcuts instead of technique
The most common mistake is chasing haze through unreliable shortcuts (flour, starch, or excessive late additions of finings-blocking material) rather than through the technique that actually produces it reliably: a substantial oat and/or wheat addition for protein-driven haze, a hop-forward late and dry-hop schedule using varieties known for producing soft, rounded bitterness, and yeast strains selected specifically for low flocculation and haze-friendly character. Where it sits apart from American IPA and Double IPA
Unlike the American IPA and Double IPA progression, which scales up the same core "clean, bright, assertively bitter" philosophy, New England IPA branches off in a genuinely different direction — soft rather than sharp, hazy rather than bright, built around late and dry hopping rather than a firm bittering charge. Oxidation is a bigger risk here than in almost any other style
Because this style depends so heavily on fresh, volatile hop aroma compounds for its actual identity, and because it's typically consumed relatively young rather than aged, oxidation exposure during transfer, packaging, and storage does more damage here than it would to a style whose character comes from more stable malt or yeast-driven compounds. Careful, low-oxygen transfer technique, minimal headspace at packaging, and genuinely fresh consumption (this is not a style built for long-term cellaring the way a Barleywine or Imperial Stout is) all matter more to a successful outcome here than for almost any other style on this site — a technically well-brewed batch can still taste dull and stale within weeks if oxygen exposure wasn't controlled.
