The real engineering problem this style solves
Brewing a technically sound Double IPA is a harder problem than "add more of everything" suggests, because gravity and hop rate don't scale in a simple linear relationship with perceived balance — at these hopping rates, hop utilization actually drops as boil gravity rises (the same Tinseth "bigness factor" effect that makes any high-gravity beer need proportionally more hop mass to reach a given IBU), so hitting a genuinely well-balanced 80+ IBU beer at 1.075+ OG takes real calculation rather than intuition. A recipe scaled up from a standard IPA by simple proportion often undershoots both bitterness and aroma intensity relative to what the higher gravity needs to stay in balance.

The most common mistake is underpitching — this style asks the yeast to reach genuinely high attenuation at high starting gravity while under real hop-driven fermentation stress, and an inadequate pitch produces stalled fermentation or harsh fusel character that no amount of hop character can mask. A second mistake is neglecting the malt backbone entirely in the rush to maximize hops; even at this hop intensity, Double IPA needs enough real malt character underneath to keep the beer from tasting thin or one-dimensionally bitter rather than balanced.
Grain bill and hop character
A substantial clean American base malt, sometimes with a modest addition of simple sugar to boost gravity and fermentability without adding excess body, plus a small crystal-malt addition for a touch of complexity without pushing colour or sweetness too far. Hops dominate the recipe at every stage — bittering, late-boil, whirlpool, and typically a substantial dry-hop addition — using high-alpha American varieties for bittering and the full range of citrus-pine-tropical aroma varieties for everything after, at total hop quantities well beyond what any other style on this site calls for.

A style where balance, not raw intensity, separates good from great
It's worth being direct that maximum IBU is not the goal here — the most respected commercial examples of this style are distinguished by how well they balance genuinely high bitterness and alcohol against a malt backbone substantial enough to carry it, not by which one pushes furthest toward the top of the stated range. A homebrewer chasing the highest possible IBU number without matching malt support ends up with a harsh, one-dimensional beer rather than a genuinely well-made example of the style.
Fresh hops matter more here than almost anywhere else
Because this style depends so heavily on late-boil, whirlpool, and dry-hop character for its aroma-forward identity, hop freshness matters more here than for a style whose hop bill is mostly bittering-focused. Hop alpha acid and, more importantly, the volatile aromatic oils that drive citrus-pine-tropical character both degrade with storage time and warm temperatures, and a Double IPA built with several-months-old hops stored at room temperature loses a disproportionate share of exactly the character this style depends on most. Vacuum-sealed, cold-stored hops, used as fresh as practically possible, are worth the extra effort here in a way they matter less for a more restrained, bittering-forward style.
