Flaked Rice and rice hulls share a name and a plant of origin, and that's where the similarity ends — new brewers occasionally confuse the two, but they do essentially opposite jobs. Flaked Rice is a fermentable adjunct, gelatinised rice starch that a base malt's enzymes convert into fermentable sugar during the mash. Rice hulls are the inedible outer husk, contain no starch worth mentioning, and are added purely as a physical filter aid to prevent a stuck sparge — they don't ferment and don't belong in the same conversation as a percentage-of-the-grist decision.
The blandest common adjunct
Of all the common lightening adjuncts, Flaked Rice is arguably the most neutral — even more so than flaked maize, since rice carries less inherent oil and flavour character than corn does to begin with. What it contributes to a beer is almost entirely structural: lighter body, paler colour, higher attenuation relative to an all-malt grist, with essentially no flavour signature of its own to notice.
Why brewers reach for that neutrality
Some of the world's best-known light American lagers — the ones built specifically around a crisp, unobtrusive, easy-drinking profile — use rice for exactly this reason: it dilutes malt character and thins body without adding any competing flavour, letting a clean lager yeast and a light hop bill be the entire flavour statement of the beer. Where corn brings a faint sweetness of its own, rice brings essentially nothing at all.
Colour and conversion

American light lager and some Asian-style pale lagers are the styles most associated with rice as an adjunct, generally at 20-30% of the grist alongside a clean base malt and a neutral, high-attenuating lager yeast strain.
A tradition older than the "light beer" category
Rice as a brewing adjunct in parts of Asia predates the modern American "light lager" marketing category by decades — several long-established Asian lager traditions adopted German brewing science in the late 19th and early 20th centuries while adapting the grain bill to locally available and more affordable rice rather than importing barley for the entire mash. That's a separate lineage from rice's use in American light lager, even though the ingredient and its neutral, body-lightening role are functionally similar in both traditions.
Corn as the alternative
Flaked maize is the closest functional substitute, delivering a similar body-and-colour-lightening effect with a bit more flavour character of its own; dextrose (corn sugar) is a fermentable-sugar alternative for thinning body further without adding any grain character at all, though it skips the mash-tun step entirely since it's already simple sugar and behaves nothing like a grain adjunct once it's in the kettle.
