American Light Lager Style Guideline

American Light Lager is the lightest-bodied beer style with its own named guideline entry — not a watered-down version of American Lager, but a deliberately engineered target: fewer calories and less body from a lower starting gravity pushed through unusually high attenuation, rather than simply diluted with extra water.

Where it came from

The style is a mid-1970s American development, a direct response to a growing calorie-conscious segment of beer drinkers. Brewers already making a clean, adjunct-lightened American Lager found they could go further by increasing the fermentable share of the wort — more corn or rice adjunct, sometimes an enzyme addition to break down starches a standard mash wouldn't fully convert — so that fermentation consumed more of the wort's extract and left less residual sugar and body behind. The result reads lighter in the glass not because it's weaker beer diluted with water, but because a larger fraction of what's there actually fermented out.

The number that defines this style

OG 1.028-1.040, FG 0.998-1.008, roughly 8-12 IBU, SRM 2-3, ABV 2.8-4.2% — this style's approximate BJCP 2021 window. Check the current guidelines directly before brewing for competition.

The number that actually separates this style from every other pale lager on this site isn't any of those ranges by itself — it's attenuation. Landing at the midpoint of both ranges (OG 1.034, FG 1.003) and running it through the ABV calculator gives 91.2% apparent attenuation, alongside 4.07% ABV by the simple formula and 4.02% by the advanced one — the two formulas sit unusually close together here because American Light Lager's OG is low enough that they haven't diverged the way they do at higher gravities. That 91% figure is far higher than a standard all-malt lager reaches with a normal mash schedule and a typical lager strain; American Lager, the style's fuller-bodied parent, lands closer to 84% at its own midpoint on the same math.

What actually happens if you skip the high-attenuation part

The single most common way homebrewers miss this style isn't the gravity — it's easy enough to mash thin and dilute to a low OG. It's forgetting that the low body has to come from somewhere real. Brew this at a normal single-infusion mash temperature with a standard lager yeast and you'll finish with more residual body and a higher FG than the style calls for, even at the right starting gravity, because a conventional mash simply doesn't convert this much of the wort to fermentable sugar. Hitting the attenuation this style needs takes either a mash rest low enough (around 148-150°F / 64-66°C) to maximize fermentable extract, a meaningful adjunct share, or both — plain dilution alone gets you a weak beer, not a light one.

Hop and grain choices stay deliberately minimal

Bitterness sits low and clean by design — boiling roughly 16 g (about 0.6 oz) of a 4.5% alpha noble variety for the full 60 minutes, in a 19 L (5 gal) batch at this style's OG, comes out to about 10.1 IBU by Tinseth (11.7 by Rager, a BU:GU near 0.30 on the Tinseth number). That sits right in the style's stated window and illustrates how little hop character this style asks for compared to almost anything else on the styles list. On the grain side, a base of well-modified 2-row or 6-row pilsner-type malt with a substantial corn or rice adjunct share keeps flavor genuinely restrained; specialty or crystal malt has essentially no place here, since even a small addition would push both colour and residual sweetness past what a 2-3 SRM, highly-attenuated beer can carry without tasting out of balance.

Where this sits next to American Lager

American Lager is the style to compare this against directly — same general adjunct-lightened lineage, same clean lager fermentation character, but American Lager runs a noticeably higher OG ceiling (up to 1.050 against this style's 1.040) and settles for ordinary lager attenuation rather than chasing the extreme end. Brewed side by side from the same grain bill philosophy, American Lager will read as the fuller, slightly maltier beer even though neither style is meant to carry much malt character at all — the gap between them is really a gap in how hard the mash and adjunct schedule push toward fermentability, not a gap in ingredients.
