At 15-19% alpha acid, Enigma carries real bittering strength, high even by Australian high-alpha standards, though its distinctive sweetness means most recipes reserve at least part of the charge for late-boil or dry-hop use where that candy character actually reaches the finished beer. That combination of high alpha acid and genuinely unusual sweetness gives it a dual identity: efficient enough to bitter with, but distinctive enough that doing so exclusively would waste what makes it worth choosing in the first place. Ella is the closer Australian substitute for the dark-fruit side of Enigma's character, sharing some black currant and stone fruit territory without Enigma's specific candy sweetness. Galaxy offers an alternative for sheer aromatic intensity from the same broad Australian family. Hazy IPA and modern Australian pale ale both use Enigma. Its alpha ceiling runs above both Galaxy's and Ella's, unusually high for a hop most recipes still treat primarily as an aroma variety rather than a bittering one.
